Tigray is a northern province of Ethiopia bordering Eritrea and Sudan
The Ethiopian Parliamentary Human Rights Commission reported that militants also carried out a number of other attacks in the region.
A militant attack on a passenger bus in the Benishangul Gumuz region of Ethiopia killed 34 people, Xinhua reported on Sunday November 15.
“At least 34 people were killed in an attack by unknown gunmen on a passenger bus overnight in the Benishangul Gumuz region of northwestern Ethiopia,” the report said.
It is noted that the country’s authorities sent detachments of security officials to fight the militants.
The details of the attack have not yet been reported.
Such incidents have become more frequent in the country amid military confrontation between the forces of the government of the country and the Tigray region.
“The latest attack is a grim addition to the human toll we are collectively suffering,” said Daniel Bekele, head of the government’s human rights commission, in a statement.
He called on regional and federal authorities to jointly develop a strategy for Benishangul-Gumuz as militant attacks in the region are growing “at an unrelenting pace.” Militants killed at least 45 people in the same region in September, according to government figures.
Recall that the death toll during the protests in Ethiopia after the assassination of popular singer Haakaalu Hundesaa has increased to 239.
