But First, Lip Prep

Lip color goes on more smoothly and stays on longer if your lips are properly prepped. This involves using a gentle sugar scrub to exfoliate away dead skin cells followed by a conditioning balm to soothe and moisturize. Just be careful not to over exfoliate as this may cause irritation. Typically, once or twice a week is good.

How to prep your lips:

1. With a clean finger, take some lip scrub and gently exfoliate lips with it.

2. Wipe off scrub with a clean damp cloth or paper towel.

3. Apply a conditioning lip treatment.

1. Lip Gloss Only

Of all the different lip color formulas, lip gloss is probably the easiest to work with. Lip glosses can be clear, tinted or shimmery and are great for everyday makeup looks because they’re usually very natural looking and easy to apply. Don’t underestimate lip gloss’s ability to amp up a glam look though! More on that later. For now, we’re talking solo lip gloss.

How to get the look:

Simply swipe on a generous amount of your favorite lip gloss for a naturally juicy looking pout.

2. Lip Liner and Lip Gloss Combo

The dark lip liner and lip gloss look was huge back in the 90’s. Who remembers? (If you do, I hate to break it to you but we’re old. LOL!) Anyway, it turns out the combo seems to be making a comeback. Although these days, it’s looking a bit more modern and refined.

How to get the look:

1. Use a dark-toned lip liner to heavily line and fill lips about halfway in.

2. Fill in center of lips with lip gloss of choice and gently blot lips together to blend.

3. Lip Liner Only

Sometimes, all you need is lip liner. Some lip liner and pencil formulas are so smooth and creamy that you can use them to line AND fill in your lips for an intensely gorgeous lip look.

How to get the look:

1. Use lip liner to carefully but heavily trace the outline of your lips.

2. Use the same liner to fill in lips.

4. Lipstick and Lip Liner Combo

A lipstick bullet is probably the image that comes to mind when most people think of lip color. It is indeed a classic lip color product, and pairing it with a lip liner helps seal in the color and keep it from bleeding outside the lip line.

How to get the look:

1. Use a lip liner similar to your lipstick shade to line and fill in about two-thirds of lips.

2. Apply lipstick onto entire lip area including over the areas with liner.

3. Gently blot lips together to blend.

5. Liquid Lip Color

Liquid lip colors are the most long-lasting of all the formulas and are great for those who just don’t have time to be reapplying throughout the day. However, they are the most challenging to work with because of their intensely pigmented opaque formulas. There’s little room for error with these ones so you want to make sure you’ve got the technique down.

How to get the look:

1. Start by filling in the center of lips and working your way outward.

2. Finish off by using the pointed tip of the applicator to carefully define your lip line.

3. For extra intensity, apply an extra layer of color.
